Join us for a power breakfast at Artishouse, the new collaborative art studio in the heart of the Garment District, for Colleagues & Friends: Flying Solo, a dynamic discussion with two accomplished arts businesswomen who have carved their niche in the freelance world. Associate Director of POWarts, Anastasia Gudko, will moderate a conversation with Clanci Jo Conover, owner of Clanci Jo Fine Art Services, and Kaitlyn Ward, owner of Kingston Ward Projects.

Striking out on your own can be liberating, unpredictable, and downright scary. Flying Solo will delve into the art and science of navigating the world of freelance work and the intricacies of launching your own business in the arts.

Artishouse is a new collaborative art studio in Manhattan’s Garment District. Launched earlier this year, the innovative studio provides artists space and community and brings together both full-time and part-time painters and sketch artists in a communal studio. Members can get 24/7 access to the studio and use the space to paint, collaborate with other artists, and exhibit their work. Learn more here.

Clanci Jo Conover, Owner, Clanci Jo Fine Art

Clanci Jo Conover is a multifaceted arts professional and independent curator, specializing in cataloging and collections management. She has curated exhibitions in New York for Sotheby’s Institute of Art and various Upper East Side galleries. Her work has extended into the fields of American, Asian, Contemporary, Impressionist, Modern, and Old Masters art, as well as 20th & 21st century design. A graduate of Sotheby’s Institute of Art with a master in art business, she also studied art history and communication at Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence, Italy, and Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Since completing her master’s degree in 2018, she has worked with art galleries across the country, cataloged entire artist portfolios, worked on multimillion dollar collections, lectured at institutions of higher learning like The College of William & Mary, served as an advisor for a Ugandan school, and taught afterschool programs locally in New York City. Clanci Jo Fine Art Services provided art-world businesses dynamic solutions for their unique and ever-changing needs.

Kaitlyn Ward, Owner, Kingston Ward Projects

Kaitlyn has a diverse background with experience in both the non-profit and commercial sectors of the art world. As director of Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA, she worked with national and international artists at all stages in their careers, producing a total of thirty-five exhibitions over the course of her five-year tenure at the non-profit. After moving to New York to pursue her Masters in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and graduating with honors in 2018, she became Project Manager for The Winter Show––the premiere art, antiques, and design fair in America. Working closely with the Executive Director, Co-Chairs, and Board to produce the fair and fulfill the mission of its non-profit beneficiary, East Side House Settlement, she was responsible for managing 70+ international dealers, overseeing all major advertising campaigns, and working with the design team to produce the fair catalogue. In 2021 Kaitlyn started Kingston Ward Projects––a full service art consultancy with a focus on collections management and curatorial projects. Cataloging collections for artist estates, collectors, and appraisers, she is committed to preserving the legacy of underrepresented artists and collections. She remains dedicated to supporting New York-based artists by managing an exhibition and art loan program for a number of corporate clients in Manhattan.
